Well, going into this semester with a frikked up awesome sign up on Clubs Day, it was followed up by cancellations of practice times, practice outdoors until the sun went down and other mishaps not worth mentioning. However, even though we lost a couple of games in Wellington Tournament, we still did really awesome I think, with old players stepping it u a notch and new players making a grandiose effort! Well done team, thanks for sticking in there!

As for next semester, two very interesting tournaments are coming up, the Auckland tournament and the Christchurch tournament. I will fill you in on details tomorrow at practice. It doesn't matter if we are just a few going, there are spots on other teams where we can join in on the fun. And hey, both towns are frikking awesome to party in ;D

Wellington Tournament / Next weeks practice cancelled

Hi guys, Wellington tournament ended with us second to last. Not to despair though, we had an awesome time and even though we lost we had a few good runs ;). Also, the night out afterwards was.. ..interesting =D.

Also, practice on the 20th of May is cancelled due to Rec Center having re-launch night for their classes. See you all on the 27th again!

Massey Handball received a diploma for winning the 50/50 Social League (Dodgeball & Handball). Also Nathan is posing with a diploma for Alexandra Leander, individual contribution award. I nominated her because she has put a lot of work in organising our teams for the Wellington tournament as well as our own tournament, at the same time she is living partly in Palmerston North and partly Wellington, doing veterinary studies and gave birth, so yeah, well done Alex! And more importantly, thank you.

50/50 Social League Winners

Well done to all team members involved in winning the Massey University 50/50 Social League. Not completely unwinnable considering we are the only ones consistently training handball (the semi-final and final were played as handball games). Semi-Final win 10-7 against Mobility Scooters Manawatu and Final win against Pulse Sport 24-9. Well done guys and thanks for playing!

Wellington Open Handball Tournament 2008

Early morning on the 3^rd of May, two men’s teams and two girls (who would be playing in a mixed team) made the journey from Palmy down to Wellington for the 2008 Open Handball Tournament. Competing against 7 other teams overall with four games to play in one day, it would be tough. Massey 2 was comprised of players all new to the sport, and the girls and Massey 1 team and were lacking a few key players, one of which was denied playing because his car broke down in Masterton that morning! This notwithstanding, the teams played very well!! Special credit goes to the goalie; Martin Schwalbe, who played for both Massey 1 and 2, 8 games in total!

Massey 2 played the first game at 8am in the morning and put on a good show against the Spartans with only a 4 goal loss. Massey 1 lost against Ballermann, the overall winner, in the following game, going down clear but fighting. The second game for Massey1 was much better, claiming victory over Dunedin to secure a spot in the top 6. Massey 2 stood no chance against Auckland in their second game. The final two games for both teams were extremely tough with no more victories for either team. While Massey 2 played exceptionally well against both Dunedin and Victoria University, and were unlucky not to get at least one victory, Massey1 somewhat under-performed against the Spartans. Overall, Massey 1 came 6^th and Massey 2 came 9^th but all were happy with the results and enjoying the experience.

The girls mixed team dominated from start to finish, winning the girls division. Needless to say, the drinks were on the guys!

The Wellington organisers did a great job as always and the weekend was a great opportunity for handball people in New Zealand to meet up and enjoy this fast and exhilarating sport.

New Season and Annual Meeting

There will probably an more inconvenient time for practices. The times are taken by gym fitness classes to 6.30pm every night, then other major clubs have ongoing social league games, as netball, basketball etc . what we have to realize is that the rec center tries to accomodate sports with the most number of people, if 100 students wanto play indoor netball and 15 people play handball, its quite natural to see that netball unfortunately gets priority, nothing we can do about it sorry!!

Our options as i see it are the following:

tuesdays or wednesdays 4.00-5.25pm
if we chose to have the tuesday time, there is a possibility to also have a one hour time on a wednesday evening (not sure what time but after 6.30) but i didn't see this time as a viable option as a set time as it was only one hour.

anyway this will mean we practice skills mostly on the weeekly training time and maybe play 25 last minutes.

Weekends
we also have the option of booking the hall on weekends, maybe try to do every other weekend, for a couple of hours just to play games??? the time will vary depending on other bookings for the hall.

Also remember that Wellington has invited us to play in their league which means playing away in wellington maybe every 3rd weekend. (one weekend at least this semester will be games in Palmy against vic uni and wellington spartans)

ok some food for thought, please have a think and look at your timetables etc to see which one of these days suits best. we will discuss this on the meeting next week and vote for the day that suits the most.. so please book in this time for meeting and tell everyone you know to come along and be members this year!!!

Veteran seeking handball converts

NEEDING A HAND: Learna Tatana, who regularly trains with a dozen handball enthusiasts at Massey University's recreation centre, issues her challenge to get involved in something different.

HANDBALL
Handball is about as minor as minority sports get in Manawatu, but 36-year-old Learna Tatana is out to change all that.

The New Zealand player was recently made the Central region co-ordinator, which effectively means she is out to spread the sport's gospel.

"Its a good sport to take up because there's elements of softball and basketball in it with the throwing and dribbling."

Tatana said the best way to describe handball was to compare it with waterpolo being played on a basketball court.

"You can bounce the ball like in basketball, and there's six players and a goalkeeper, and you can only score from outside a semicircle.

"There's so many opportunities to go overseas in the sport . . . Korea basically provide scholarships, where they pay for education, training and meals."

Tatana made her way back into the New Zealand team last year after a 13-year absence while she raised her two children in Palmerston North.

She was inspired to come back after years of watching her children playing sport.

"I was basically just sick of sitting on the sidelines - I think just because you reach your 30s, you shouldn't stop your sports."

Her first step towards getting fit again was taking part in a six-week UCOL fitness programme late last year.

It helped Tatana reduce her weight by around 20kg and bring her heart-rate down from 72 to 54 beats per minute.

Tatana still considers herself to be below peak fitness, but impressed national selectors enough to be picked for a four- nations tournament in Auckland last weekend.

She had first thought seriously about playing again for New Zealand when a former team-mate spotted her at the gym last year and invited her back.

Her New Zealand team eventually went on to beat Vanuatu 24-16 and Tahiti 27-25 last weekend, but narrowly lost the decider to New Caledonia 19-18.

The Oceania championships are in Australia next month, the winner to go to the world champs in France in December.

Her position at pivot where her role is to create space for the shooters.

* Handball has been an Olympic sport since 1972 and is popular in South Korea and parts of Europe, including Spain and Scandinavia.

Thought it might be worth to say good bye to Babara and Andrea. Babara founded the Massey Club in 2006 and therefore is responsible directly for you enjoying Handball. Also for your black eyes, bruises, muscle injuries and for some of you wearing the Silver Fern. And for the goals which are very popular also for the Indoor soccer teams.
I though we should in old (American) tradition never let another player play with her number. Fortunately she never played with a number for Massey!

The official launch of the NZHF Development Project began with a presentation of 10 balls and magazines to the newest, and most rapidly developing Handball Clubs in New Zealand. The occasion was a one day mini-tournament organised solely by the club members themselves.
This being a surprise presentation, made by NZHF Treasurer Iva Sajdl, Massey University Handball Club did not have much time to prepare for the ‘BEFORE & AFTER’ photo, it all happened so quickly... ;o)

Apparently our next games are (more or less) confirmed. Wellington 1 +2 will come for a challenge at the 24th of September to lovely Palmy. The Girls are playing at the same day 2 matches as well. As far I remember they are playing Wellington and Te Aroha Handball Club from Lower Hutt. To get more info ask Alex.
Keep coming to practice (Mo 4.00-5.30pm; Wed 6.30-8pm) to be fit enough for playing 2 games at one day...and improve your skills.
There was something on Friday 18th of August as well. As I not exactly remember ask Pauly on Wed. I think he organized a show match with or against the Maori Sports Association from Massey.
And if you have New Zealand citizenship and want to try to get into the National Team ask Alex for infos!

Leading the pool

And with this second win we definitively lead the male pool.
Since the Welly guys are being nice we are considered as having played with both competitive and social teams, but that's a typo really, and we shall consider ourselves leading the social one only.
There will be time to meet the strong guy. and we'd better grow stronger or we'll have our arses strongly beaten.
Another issue is we now have the tools to set up a fully operational field and we'll start receiving guest teams... first of all the girls which in turn will most likely have their first match this sunday. COME ON GIRLSSSSSS!!!
I hope we can fix this wednes a time after training at the MUBAR to have a couple of pints and watch the previous games. But this is subordinated to Dan being able to transfer the vieo streams... COME ON DAN!
It'll be fun to watch at the games together and have fun of ourselves (in the best case scenario).

Game 2: Victoria 14: 20 Massey

Second game, second win. I think its fairly sure to say we are the only never beaten sports team in Palmerston North. Let's celebrate that as long as we can. I have the feeling next time they Wellington teams will play with their best teams (they were missing 5 National players but we were missing Topscorer Pauly and National Goalie Donald). But until then Palmerston North is just better as the capitol! Well done!

I hope so because I am afrai we're having a thougher match than last one!
Well, Martin is playing his favourite role and we'll have to find out other new assets for the team.
Good ways to find out if we're able to adapt to new situations.

The next game for the men is at 21 of May in Wellington. This time against Victoria University.
Unfortunately after the men performance last week Wellington got scared and postponed the womens game to practice more (actually I think they need to recruit more players).

The first ever Handball game of an Palmerston North Handball team was a win! Even it was only against a Wellington B-team..a win is a win!

The team which made history playing and winning the first game of a Palmy Handball team ever Even at the warm-up the player moved faster than light astonishing the coach.
